What is Botox?

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a neurotoxin which was initially created to treat migraines. However, it was also learned it helps elimate wrinkles and fine lines! Since then, there have been four different toxins in the market that not only help with fine lines and wrinkles, but also in reducing muscle contractions to create more aesthetically pleasing outcomes.

The four toxins on the market currently are Botox, Jeuveau (Newtox), Dysport, and Xeomin. They are referred to as Tox, Neurotoxins, or Neuromodulators. They all work beautifully and practically in the same manner. Preference of product choice is determined by your goals and the injector.

Consultation

When deciding to get Botox for the first time, please ensure your injector does a THOROUGH consultation. Each muscle group affects the other and can play a huge role in your desired outcomes. It’s important to look at the face as a whole unit and understand the anatomy behind each injection site. Ask you injector questions and make sure you both are on the same page before proceeding with the treatment.

If your injector has a difficult time answering your questions and concerns, RUN.

At MedWell Aesthetics, rest assured we do a comprehensive detailed consultation addressing anatomy, physiology, medical history, concerns, and outcomes.

Treatment Areas

Botox, as we know, can treat fine lines and wrinkles. However, what most people do not know, is that it can also treat areas of excessive muscle contractions resulting in decreased sweating, tightening of the skin, and facial jaw slimming.

The most common treatment areas are the forehead, between the brows, and crow’s feet (around the eyes).

It can also be used in the bunny lines around the nose to help relax when scrunching. Botox can also help lift the top of the nose and decrease nasal flaring caused by excessive muscle contractions when smiling.

Gummy smile can be corrected by injecting a few units in the upper lip elevator muscles.

Lip flip is done by injecting a few units in the orbicularis oris muscle to help flip the upper lip resulting in a sublte increase in show of the upper lip.

It can also be used in treating the DAO muscle which pulls the mouth down creating a sad or frowning look, when injected here it helps lift the corners of the mouth up!

A treatment for TMJ that also works beautifully in slimming the face is the masseter reduction with Botox. This helps reduce the appearance of a square-like jaw and creates a slimmer V-shaped face.

A Nefertiti Lift is a non-invasive rejuvenation treatment for the neck and jawline. Botox is injected in the surrounding muslces to help tuck the skin underneath resulting in a more defined jawline and smoother appearance of neck.

Hyperhidrosis is treated with injecting about 50 units of Botox under each arm to reduce excessive sweating and odor. The results in this area can last upto 6 months!

Results

After the treatment, you will notice some slight bruising or swelling which is completely expected. That should subside within 2 weeks.

Avoid alcohol, NSAIDs (advil, ibuprofen), and fish oil 72 hours prior to the treatment and 24 hours post treatment.

It is also advised to not perform any heavy exercises for 24 hours post treatment.

Avoid lying down, getting a massage/haircut etc for 4-6 hours after treatment as this can move the product around and cause adverse reactions.

The Botox will start kicking in within 3-5 days. You may notice some asymmetries during this time, however, within 2 weeks you will see the full results!

Botox lasts anywhere from 3-4 months depending on individual metabolism, activity level, lifestyle, diet etc.

Maintenance should be done every 3-4 months to ensure those stubborn lines to do not return.

There is a misconception that if you stop doing Botox, the skin will become “saggier”. That is not true. If you were to stop, the skin will go back to baseline and the muscles will automatically start contracting how they were prior to being injected by neurotoxins.

At MedWell Aesthetics, we provide a free 2 week follow-up to ensure the desired results have been achieved.
